A group of high school students in California say they
were persecuted at school for wearing American flag t-shirts.
A group of students decided to show their support for the red
white and blue on Wednesday -- which was Cinco de Mayo.
The school's principal at Live Oak High School near San
Francisco told them either take off the shirts or they could be
suspended.
The students say the principal and vice principal called the
flags disrespectful to Mexican-American students who were
celebrating Cinco de Mayo.
"Our Hispanic vice principal was taking their side, and was
thinking that we were being racist towards them, so he was
discriminating against us, making us take off our stuff," said
Matthew Darino, a sophomore.
Students were asked if they were trying to cause trouble.
"We're not trying to start trouble. We're in America," another
student said. "We can't wear our own colors?"
The students refused to take off the shirts - and were sent home
for the day.
Their parents complained to the school system and the district's
superintendent says the principal went too far.
