Daniel Chester was an American sculptor.
His best known creation is the sculpture of a seated Abraham
Lincoln (1920) at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.
Some people believe Chester put an extra
face on the Lincoln statue and that it bears a likeness to the
sculptor himself. Others believe that Chester actually
created the extra face in the image of Robert E. Lee, the
commander the Confederate Army in the American Civil War that
opposed Lincoln.
The face has mostly gone unnoticed because
it is only visible from this particular angle. Can you see
it?
